[Microsoft Designer lets you](https://todayfixtech.com/microsoft-365-applications-overview/) make a first design without building everything from scratch in a separate editor. To get started, open Designer in your browser or app, sign in with a Microsoft account, then begin from a prompt, a template, or a blank canvas. From there, add your text and images, check the layout, and save, download, or share the finished design.

## What you need before you start

Before you begin, make sure you [can sign in with a Microsoft](https://todayfixtech.com/microsoft-365-tips-tricks/) account. If you use Designer in a browser, open a supported browser and sign in there; if you use the app, open the app and sign in there instead.

Have a starting point ready so you do not stop halfway through. That can be:

- a short text prompt that describes the design you want
- a template idea, such as a flyer, social post, or invitation
- your own image or logo
- any text you want to place in the design, such as a title, date, or call to action

If you already know the size or purpose of the design, that helps too. For example, you might want a square post, a banner, or a simple card. If you do not know the exact format yet, you can still begin with a blank design and adjust as you go.

## Open Microsoft Designer and start a new project

1. Open Microsoft Designer in your browser or app and sign in.
2. On the home screen, choose how you want to begin. You can usually start from a prompt, pick a template, or open a blank canvas.
3. If you want Designer to generate a starting point, type a short prompt that describes what you want. For example: "clean birthday invitation with blue and gold colors". Then start the design.
4. If you prefer a ready-made structure, choose a template that matches your goal and open it.
5. If you want full control, choose a blank canvas. The result should be an empty design area with tools around it, ready for you to add content.

The exact labels on the home screen can vary a little depending on whether you are using the web version or the app, but the process is the same: start from a prompt, a template, or a blank design.

## Add your content and shape the design

1. Add your main text first. Click the text tool or the area where Designer lets you insert text, then type a title, subtitle, or message.
2. Adjust the wording until it reads clearly. If you are making a flyer, keep the main message short and put the details below it.
3. Add an image if you want one. Use your own upload, a generated image, or a built-in image option if Designer shows it in your view.
4. Place the text and image in a simple layout. Put the main title near the top or center, place the image where it supports the message, and leave enough empty space so the design does not feel crowded.
5. Use the main formatting controls to refine the look. These usually include font style, size, color, alignment, background, and spacing. If you are unsure what each control does, select one element at a time and watch what changes on the canvas.
6. If Designer offers ready-made layout options, try one and then adjust it. For example, in a birthday card, you might use large text for the headline, a photo or illustration below it, and the date or greeting in smaller text near the bottom.
7. Keep checking the canvas as you work. If something overlaps or sits too close to the edge, move it before adding more elements.

The easiest way to stay oriented is to work one layer at a time: message first, image second, layout third. That keeps the design readable and makes it easier to fix problems as they come up.

## Save, download, or share the finished design

1. Check the top area of the editor for the main action button or sharing controls.
2. Save the design if you want to keep editing it later. If Designer is signed in and the file is loaded correctly, your work should stay attached to your account or project.
3. Download the design if you need a file on your device. Choose the download or export option in the main action menu, then pick the available format shown in your view.
4. Share the design if you want to send it to someone else or use a share link. Use the share option in the editor and follow the prompts on screen.

The exact save, download, and share labels can vary by version and by where you started the design, so look for the main action menu if you do not see them right away.

If you cannot find those options, check that you are inside the editor, not still on the home screen, and confirm that you are signed in.

## What a finished design looks like

Before you call it done, do one last review of the whole design. Look for text that is too small, spacing that feels uneven, and elements that sit too close together.

Read the main text once from top to bottom. If you have to slow down or squint, make the font larger or shorten the wording. The most important line should stand out first.

Look at the edges of the canvas. Nothing important should feel cut off or cramped. If a button, date, or logo is near the edge, move it inward a little.

If the design includes a background image, make sure the text still contrasts enough to read easily. A lighter text color, a simpler background, or a subtle overlay can help if the words blend in.

A successful finish looks balanced, reads clearly, and has no obvious clipping, overlap, or accidental empty spaces. You should be able to reopen the design, see your text and images in place, and save, download, [or share it without](https://todayfixtech.com/share-files-microsoft-365/) losing the layout you made.
