Microsoft Family Safety not connecting usually means the child’s device is missing, activity isn’t syncing, or the app is stuck in a sign-in loop. The safest fix is to confirm the parent and child are using the right Microsoft accounts, make sure the child is in the family group and assigned to the correct device, then try a sign-out, restart, and sign-in cycle if sync still doesn’t recover.

## What "not connecting" looks like in Family Safety

When Family Safety isn’t connecting, you usually see one of three things: the child’s device never appears in the family view, activity stops updating even though the device is being used, or the app keeps asking to sign in and never finishes syncing.

Sometimes the parent side looks fine while the child side does not. The family group may show online, but the child’s phone, PC, or console still doesn’t show under that child’s account. In other cases, the device appears once and then stops reporting activity after a sign-in change, update, or restart.

## Before you start

This fix applies when you already have a family group and Family Safety just stopped syncing, or when setup was started on a new device but never finished cleanly.

Before changing anything, check these basics:

- The parent is signed into the Microsoft account that manages the family group.
- The child is signed into the Microsoft account that belongs to that child, not a sibling’s or parent’s account.
- The child is actually listed in the family group.
- The child’s device is assigned to that child’s account, not just loosely added somewhere in the family.
- The device has normal internet access, since Family Safety can’t sync if Microsoft services can’t be reached.

If the parent, child, family group, and device assignment are all correct and the problem still shows up on more than one device, stop here and check the current Microsoft support page or the current app version before trying deeper changes. Family Safety behavior can vary by device type, operating system version, and app version.

## The safest reversible fix if syncing still fails

If the accounts and family group look right but the device still won’t connect, use a reversible reset of the session first. This does not remove the family group or the child’s device history.

1. Sign out of Family Safety on the parent side.
2. On the child’s device, sign out of the Microsoft account used for Family Safety if the app or settings allow it.
3. Restart the child’s device.
4. Reopen Family Safety and sign back in with the same Microsoft account you verified earlier.
5. Recheck the family group and sync status.

If the app refreshes and the device appears, the problem was likely a stale sign-in state or an old session token. If nothing changes, don’t start removing the child from the family or changing several account settings at once. That makes it harder to tell which step mattered and can turn a simple sync problem into a bigger repair job.

## Where to verify the connectivity problem

Check the result in all three places that can show a connection problem:

- On the device, confirm the child is signed in to the expected Microsoft account.
- In the Family Safety app, confirm the child and device both appear under the same family group.
- In the Microsoft account family settings, confirm the child’s device is listed under that child rather than left unattached.

If the device still doesn’t show right away, wait for a normal sync cycle and refresh once. If the device appears on one side but not the other, the issue is still between the app, the device, and the Microsoft account, not a finished fix.

A successful repair usually looks ordinary: the child’s device appears under the correct child account, the family view stops showing a stalled sync, and new activity starts showing up after a normal refresh period.

## Conclusion

If the device still won’t connect after those checks, use the current Microsoft support page or the current app version for the next step rather than forcing an older repair path.
