[Microsoft Family Safety not](https://todayfixtech.com/fix-microsoft-365-login-issues/) syncing usually means the parent and child accounts are no longer aligned, the app hasn’t refreshed, or the device is holding stale permissions or family data. Start by checking that the correct Microsoft account is signed in, the device has working internet, and the Family Safety app or device is up to date. If that does not fix it, refresh the app, check family group membership and permissions, and only then move on to signing out and back in.

## What you may see when Family Safety stops syncing

You might notice that a screen-time limit, app block, location update, or activity report shows on one device but not the other. The parent may see old activity in the app, while the child device still shows the previous limits or permissions.

This usually happens after an account change, a device restart, an app update, or a network interruption. The problem is often one side keeping stale data rather than Family Safety failing everywhere.

## Before you start

Use the device where the update is missing, not the one that already looks current.

- Confirm the parent and child are still using the Microsoft accounts that belong to the same family group.
- Make sure the affected device has a working internet connection.
- Check that the Family Safety app is signed in, installed, and allowed to update.
- If the child was recently removed from the family group, added again, or moved between groups, expect a short delay while the change settles.

If the device is offline or signed into the wrong account, skip the rest of the fixes until that’s corrected. Sync cannot recover if the account relationship itself is wrong.

## Try these fixes in order

1. Confirm the correct Microsoft account is signed in.

Check the parent account in the Family Safety app or on the web, and check the child account on the device that is not updating. If the account shown there is not the one you expect, sign out and sign back in with the correct Microsoft account.

If the change appears after signing in again, the issue was an account mismatch. If nothing changes, move to the next step.

1. Check the device’s internet connection.

Open a website or another online app on the device with stale Family Safety data. If that device cannot get online, fix the connection first.

If the device is online but Family Safety still shows old data, the problem is not just connectivity.

1. Refresh the app.

Force close the Family Safety app and open it again. Wait a moment for recent activity, limits, or approvals to load.

If the app still shows old information after reopening, the local app data may be stale.

1. Check app refresh, permissions, and background access.

On mobile devices, background refresh, low power mode, or restricted data access can stop Family Safety from pulling new information. Allow the app to refresh normally, then check again.

If the app is blocked from refreshing in the background, sync can lag even when the account is correct.

1. Update Family Safety and the device.

Install any pending Family Safety or system update, then reopen the app and check again.

An older app version can keep stale family data on screen or fail to reflect newer settings. If updates were available, that was likely part of the problem.

1. Check family group membership and recent changes.

Have the parent confirm the child is still listed in the correct family group and that the expected settings are still assigned.

If the child was removed and re-added, or the family group was edited recently, give the service a short time to settle. If the wrong membership is still shown, correct that before trying anything more aggressive.

1. Sign out and back in on the affected device.

If the app still shows old data after the checks above, sign out of Family Safety and sign back in on the device that is not syncing.

This is a more disruptive step, but it can clear stale account state. If the problem comes back right away after a fresh sign-in, the device or account relationship still needs attention.

## How to tell if the sync is working again

The fix worked when recent activity, limits, or permissions show the same status on both sides after a short delay.

Check for these signs:

- recent activity appears in the parent view after the child uses the device
- a screen-time limit or app block changes and then shows up on the other side
- a permission or approval request shows the same status for both parent and child
- the app no longer shows obviously stale usage times or outdated limits

If one side updates and the other still does not after you have refreshed the app and confirmed internet access, the sync issue is still there. Go back to family group membership and sign-in state before trying more changes.

## When it keeps happening

If Family Safety keeps falling out of sync, the cause is usually something that keeps restoring stale state.

Common repeat causes are:

- the parent changes controls on one device but not from the same Microsoft account everywhere
- the child account leaves and rejoins the family group, leaving old data behind for a while
- the device time or date is wrong, which can confuse activity reporting
- background restrictions or power-saving settings turn back on after an update
- the device is using a profile that is not the one tied to the family account you expect

If the same problem returns after a fix, check family group membership first, then the device’s time and sign-in state, and finally whether Family Safety is being restricted in the background again.

## Conclusion

If the updates still won’t sync after the checks above, the next step is to review the family group and the device’s account setup again before making bigger changes.
