Microsoft Family Safety setup

Share

To set up Microsoft Family Safety, you need the parent or guardian Microsoft account, a child Microsoft account, and the child’s device signed in with the same account you add to the family group. Then create or join the family group, add the child with the child role, and turn on the permissions the feature needs on the child’s device. When it’s working, the child appears in the family dashboard, the device shows under that child, and the settings you chose start syncing and reporting.

If a child does not appear, a device won’t report, or settings don’t sync

If the child does not appear, first confirm that the Microsoft account you added is the same one signed in on the child’s device. A mismatch there is one of the simplest reasons the dashboard stays empty. If needed, remove the child from the family group and add the correct account again.

If a device will not report, check the basics in this order:

  1. Confirm the device is online.
  2. Confirm the child is signed in to the expected Microsoft account.
  3. Confirm location or activity permissions are allowed on that device.
  4. Open the Family Safety app or the device’s family settings again to refresh the connection.
  5. Wait for the dashboard to update after the next sync.

If settings do not sync, check whether the child is still signed in on the device and whether the device has permission to send updates. If you need to sign out and sign back in on the child’s device, do that only if you can do it without losing anything the child needs locally. If the issue continues, check the current Microsoft help pages for version-specific steps, because the menus and permissions can differ by device type and app version.
