If you’ve accidentally deleted your custom Word templates, you can often restore them quickly. Start by checking your Recycle Bin and common file locations. If they’re not there, you can restore [them from a backup](https://todayfixtech.com/backup-data-microsoft-365/) or use Word's AutoRecover feature.

## Where to find your deleted templates

Begin your search for deleted Word templates by checking the Recycle Bin. Right-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and select 'Open'. Look for your deleted templates here; if you find them, right-click on each and choose 'Restore' to return them to their original location.

If they’re not in the Recycle Bin, explore the default template folder on your computer. Navigate to:

```text
C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\Custom Office Templates
```

Replace 'YourUsername' with your actual Windows username. Check if any of your templates are sitting there. If you use OneDrive or another cloud service, log in and check the respective folders for your templates, as they may have been synced before deletion.

## Steps to restore from backup

If you have a backup of your files, restoring your Word templates is straightforward. Here’s how to do it:

1. Access your backup service.
2. Locate the backup folder where your documents were saved. This may be on an external hard drive or cloud service.
3. Look for the 'Custom Office Templates' folder or the specific template files that were deleted.
4. Once you find your templates, select them.
5. Copy the selected templates.
6. Navigate to the default template folder:

```text
C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\Custom Office Templates
```

1. Paste the copied templates into this folder.

Your templates should now be restored and available in Word.

## Using AutoRecover for recovery

If your Word application crashed or closed unexpectedly, AutoRecover might help you retrieve unsaved templates. To check for recoverable files, follow these steps:

1. Open Microsoft Word.
2. Go to the 'File' tab in the upper left corner.
3. Click on 'Info'.
4. Look for the 'Manage Document' option and click on it.
5. Select 'Recover Unsaved Documents'.
6. A window will pop up showing any unsaved files. Look for your template files here.
7. If you find the desired template, select it and click 'Open'.
8. Save it immediately by clicking 'File' then 'Save As'.

This method will only work for templates that were open before the crash, but it’s worth checking!

## Conclusion

After restoring your templates, remember to back them up regularly to avoid future loss. Consider using cloud storage for automatic syncing, ensuring you'll have access to your important documents even if something goes wrong again.
